Shanghai, China.

The contrast between modern and old was striking. Modern, high rise buildings and five lane highways next to small alleys where the people use public toilets and walk around with a toilet bucket.

I found the Pyjama people particularly interesting. A local custom to do your morning shopping in pyjamas and slippers. Nobody really knows why. Some say that it’s the way to show that you are a local. The government banned it in 2010 – they want more ‘cultivation’.

What really touched me while I was discovering Shanghai was seeing people, young and old, ballroom dancing together. This happened on public squares, parks and along the river.
